Timing And Tempo Of Your Golf Swing
No matter what your handicap is in golf, you have likely had rounds where everything went perfectly for your. You are playing in a great group, on an amazing course and it is a beautiful day. You are hitting your drives long, chipping perfectly, and your putts are all falling. On days like this, the game of golf seems like an easy one. Then all of a sudden everything starts to fall apart and you can’t seem to do anything correctly. All of your drives land in the rough, your short shots are not hitting the greens and your putts roll around the cups.
One of the reasons we can sometimes go from having the best round of our lives to the worst is our timing. Your body during shots needs to be completely in sync with itself. This means your arms, legs and body all need to rotate and stay in balance throughout the shot to hit the ball squarely and powerfully. Without proper timing in your swing you will not have control or power with your shots. The most important part of having great timing is that it will create a consistent swing, and over time a consistent swing will help you lower your scores and handicap.
But how can you tell if your timing is correct? If your timing is right your swing should be smooth and feel almost effortless. You will feel like you are striking the ball in the perfect spot and with the sweet spot of your club every shot. If your timing is off then your swing will feel rushed, unbalanced and you will be hitting the ball shorter and less accurately than if your timing is correct.
Another reason we sometimes fall apart on the golf course is that our tempo is wrong. Your tempo is the amount of time that your swing takes from start to finish. When you are having a great round of golf, your shots all have the same tempo and are very consistent. When you are struggling, you should make sure you are not rushing your shots or slowing them down too much. Having proper swing speed and proper swing timing are the two components to creating a perfect consistent golf swing.
One exercise you can do to work on your swing tempo is to start your swing in front of the ball instead of where you would normal start. Pick up your club and move it about a foot in front of the ball to where your club would be a foot into your follow through. Then start your swing from this position instead. This longer swing will help you develop a great tempo if repeated.
Remember, if you all of sudden start to have a terrible time on the course, you need to think about the timing and tempo of your swing. The more experience you have on the course and more you practice the easier you will be able to tell if you are swinging too fast or too slow. Good luck on the course.
